About Charter Schools

Charter Schools are innovative public schools started by parents, teachers or members of the community.  They operate independently of local boards of education under a charter granted by the State Commissioner of Education.

How Do Charter Schools Differ From Conventional Public Schools?

Charter school organizers set a clear educational mission for which they are held accountable. They must achieve the results proposed and approved by the Commissioner or the charter can be revoked and the school closed.

Many charter schools offer smaller classes, longer school days and a longer school year.  Most offer individualized learning plans for every student.  Parents and the community are deeply involved in the creation and operation of the school.

How are Charter Schools Funded?

Charter schools receive 90 percent of the local per-pupil expenditure for each student attending. The money follows the student; no extra funding is raised from taxpayers for charter schools.

Charter schools do not receive facilities funding.
