Grading Reports & System

Grading Reports

The school year is divided into four marking periods. September 11 - November 3, November 6 - January 12, January 16 - March 16, and March 19 – June 8.  At the end of each marking period, report cards are issued which indicate a marking period average/grade for each course.  The marking period average/grade is an average of the grades achieved during that marking period.  Each marking period average/grade counts for 20% of the final course grade.  The mid-term and final examinations will make up the remaining 20% of the final course grade.

Report Cards will be mailed home on the date specified on the school calendar.  Parents may call the school office to set up an appointment with their student’s teacher if there are any questions and/or concerns.

Grading System

The grading system at St. James Preparatory School is comprised of two major elements:  letter grades which are based upon numerical averages and the grade point average (G.P.A.) which is based upon a four-point scale.  As of 2006, the following is the grading scale.

                                                            G.P.A

A+       =          98-100             =          4.3333

A         =          94-97               =          4.0

A-        =          90-93               =          3.6667

B+       =          87-89               =          3.3333

B          =          84-86              =          3.0
B-        =          80-83               =          2.667

C+       =          77-79               =          2.3333
C         =          74-78               =          2.0
C-        =          70-73               =          1.667

D         =          60-69               =          1

F          =          0-59                 =          0.0

A grade of Incomplete (INC) is given in rare cases due to special circumstances; e.g., serious illness.  Grades of Incomplete must be made up by a specified date determined in consultation with the Dean.

Any grade below 60, or an F where grades are given as letters, is a failing grade.  Any student with more than two failures at the end of the year may be required to attend Summer School or leave SJP.   If this student does not attend summer school or does not pass the course in Summer School, he/she will be required to leave SJP.
